Douglas Haas left his native Kitchener, Ontario, for Europe as a young man, studying in Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany and graduating with Germany's highest degree in church music. He served as organist and choirmaster in churches in Rome and Stuttgart before returning to Canada nine years later, to become Director of Music at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Kitchener, Canada's largest Presbyterian congregation.

Choral services at St. Andrew's are telecast live twice monthly by CKCO, Kitchener. There are also special choral telecasts on Christmas day and Good Friday. Douglas Haas has given live and recorded concerts in Canada, the United States, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, England, the Netherlands, and Germany. He has recorded on the Vox-Turnabout, Cantate Bach-Studio, Decca, Waterloo and CBC labels. He has appeared as a guest artist with the Canadian Brass, The Canadian Chamber Ensemble, The London Symphony, The Stuttgart Bach Collegium, The Toronto Consort, and The Wurttemberg Chamber Orchestra.

Douglas Haas has served on the faculties of Wilfrid Laurier University and Conrad Grebel College, University of Waterloo, teaching organ, harpsichord, and fortepiano and coaching voice. He accompanies both The Renaissance Singers and The Cambridge Girls Choir.

Since 1975, Douglas Haas has hosted a weekly noon-hour concert series at St. Andrew's. He has also commissioned many organ and choral works.

In 1992, Douglas Haas received the K-W Arts Award, an honour given to those who have made outstanding contributions to cultural life in the community.

In 2007, Douglas Haas celebrated forty years of music-making at St. Andrew's.
