Robert Houghton grew up in the Toronto area and began his musical studies in piano at a young age. He received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto, his ARCT from the Royal Conservatory, and participated in the brass and orchestral programs at the Banff School of Fine Arts. During this time he had the privilege of working under such directors as Andrew Davis, Boris Brott, Mario Bernardi, Pinchas Zuckerman, and Erik Leinsdorf.
Upon completion of his bachelors degree, Mr. Houghton continued his studies at the University of Illinois, receiving a Master of Science in Music Education, and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting and Literature. During both of these degrees he participated in the graduate programs in orchestral and choral conducting, and music composition and performed for the Opera School, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band and sang in the Graduate Chorale.
Mr. Houghton is presently the Head of Music at GaIt Collegiate Institute, directing the senior band and now nationally recognized choirs. As well as directing various local groups, Mr. Houghton is a published composer and writes choral and orchestral music for St. Andrew's and other musical events in the area.
At St. Andrew's, Mr. Houghton assists Douglas Haas, directing the sanctuary choir for rehearsals and important musical events. He also rehearses, directs and orchestrates for the Chamber Orchestra when needed.
