Musings at St. Andrew’s
Rev. Patrick Gushue | Interim Minister

A Month In - and So Much to Be Thankful For

It’s been just over a month since I arrived at St. Andrew’s, and I have to say, time really does fly when you’re having fun! These first weeks have been full of conversations, worship, laughter, stories (Yes, I’m related to Brad --- very, very, very distantly!), and small moments of grace that have left me both grateful and genuinely excited about what God is already doing in this place.

What has stood out for me most clearly is the compassion that shapes the heart of this congregation. I’ve seen it in the way St. Andrew’s shows up for neighbours who are vulnerable (Pete and I have shared conversation and a snack or two), in the partnerships that extend care far beyond these walls (through our involvement with the food-bank and the homeless encampment on Victoria Street), and in the quiet, faithful acts of kindness that often go unnoticed but make all the difference. This is a church that takes its call to love seriously, not just in theory, but in practice. There is a strong sense here that faith is something we live, together, in service to others.

I’ve also been struck by the depth of connection that exists within this community. Whether through music, worship leadership, outreach, or shared service, there is real joy in how people work and serve side by side. I’ve heard again and again how meaningful it has been to find encouragement here during seasons of illness, loss, or transition - and how quickly St. Andrew’s can feel like home. There is warmth here, and a readiness to support one another when it matters most.

At the same time, St. Andrew’s has a clear and compelling sense of community. This is a congregation that knows itself as welcoming, justice-oriented, and deeply engaged with the life of the city. The doors are open, not only to those who gather in person, but increasingly to those who connect online or in new and evolving ways. There is an openness here to the idea that belonging can take many forms, and that community is something we continue to grow into together.

What gives me particular joy is noticing how many different ministries, teams, and expressions of service are already active and alive. There is so much good work happening (Wednesday Concerts, the Roy Street Project, and maybe a new daycare) and so much opportunity for people to discover where their own gifts might fit. Whether you are someone who has been here for decades, or someone still finding your way, there is room to participate, to contribute, and to build relationships that strengthen the whole.

These early weeks have left me with a deep sense of gratitude - and with real anticipation. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn your stories, to sharing in worship and ministry, and to discovering together how St. Andrew’s can keep growing as a place of compassion, connection, and community. Thank you for the welcome, the openness, and the joy you have already shared. I can’t wait to see where this next few months leads us!!

Blessing
